About strong authentication in general

What is strong customer authentication?

Strong customer authentication is 1 of the methods we use to protect your transactions. Combined with your credentials (Username, Password), it provides increased transaction security..

You can complete a transaction that requires strong authentication using 2 methods:

  1. A Push Notification or a QR Code through the myAlpha Mobile app.
  2. A myAlpha Code sent to your mobile phone (Viber or SMS).

Both methods increase transaction security, as:

  • To confirm a transaction using a Push Notification, you have to use your 4-digit myAlpha Mobile PIN or biometrics (fingerprint or Face ID).
  • Each myAlpha Code is unique, it is created only once based on your chosen transaction and used for this transaction alone.

To further protect you from the threat of online fraud, we apply an additional warning mechanism which requires a 2nd confirmation with Push Notification, myAlpha code or email, so you can complete certain transactions. For example, when you increase your daily transfer limit or when we detect unusual activity on myAlpha Web or myAlpha Mobile.

See how we protect your transactions from online fraud.

Which transactions require strong customer authentication?

e-Banking account

  • Logging into myAlpha Web.
  • Managing personal details.
  • Increasing the daily transfer limit.

Transfers

  • To another holder’s Alpha Bank account.
  • To another bank in Greece or abroad.
  • By standing order to transfer a fixed amount to another holder’s Alpha Bank account at regular intervals.

Payments

  • To cards and consumer loans at Alpha Bank or another bank in Greece.
  • To organisations.

Other banking services

  • Online applications for debit and prepaid cards.
  • Transfer of Bonus points to other account holders.

Why do I need to approve certain transactions twice?

To further protect you from the threat of online fraud, we apply an additional warning mechanism, requiring a 2nd authentication through Push Notification, myAlpha Code or email, to complete your transaction.

This mechanism is activated for certain transactions, such as when you increase your daily transfer limit or when we detect unusual activity on myAlpha Web or myAlpha Mobile.

How do I activate the Push Notifications?

You activate the Push Notifications the first time you log into e-Banking from your mobile.

If you didn’t activate them on your first login, log into myAlpha Mobile and:

  1. Tap on the 3 bars on the top right in the “Overview” screen.
  2. Tap on “Profile”.
  3. Scroll down to “Security Settings”, tap on “Push Notifications” and activate them.

What are informative Push Notifications?

These are notifications you receive through myAlpha Mobile regarding:

  • Account management issues – Device identification/removal, changes of PIN, Username, Password, mobile phone number or email address, failure to complete scheduled transfers and payments.
  • Information about transactions with selected Alpha Bank cards.

To see the informative Push Notifications you have received over the last 6 months on myAlpha Mobile: Tap on the bell icon at the upper right corner of the screen.

How can I approve transactions that require strong customer authentication using a QR Code?

You can use myAlpha Mobile to approve transactions you carry out on myAlpha Web and which require strong authentication:

  1. Choose “Show QR Code” as the authentication method.
  2. Open myAlpha Mobile on your mobile phone and, without logging in, tap on QR Code Scan.
  3. Your mobile phone camera will automatically switch on and you will have to scan the QR Code appearing on the myAlpha Web screen.
  4. A 6-digit code will appear on your mobile screen. Type this code in the respective field on myAlpha Web.

Can I receive a myAlpha Code without an active data connection?

Yes, but only through SMS. You cannot receive a myAlpha Code through Push Notification without an active data connection.

I do not have Viber installed on my mobile phone. How can I receive myAlpha Codes?

Through SMS.

However, you can always activate Push Notifications to get your transactions confirmed easier and faster.

My mobile phone number has changed. How can I receive myAlpha Codes?

You need to register your new phone number with Alpha Bank by updating your profile:

  • On your computer using myAlpha Web, provided you have access to both your old and new phone number.
  • On your mobile using myAlpha Mobile app, provided you have access to your old mobile device, where you have already downloaded and installed the app.

In all other cases, you need to register your new phone number at any Alpha Bank branch.

I do not receive myAlpha Code SMS texts on my mobile phone. What should I do?

Make sure that:

  • You do not have poor reception.
  • You have activated roaming services if you are abroad.
  • You get other texts.

If none of the above seems to be the problem, try restarting your mobile phone and requesting another myAlpha Code. If the problem persists, you should contact your service provider.

You can always receive myAlpha Codes on Viber, as long as you have created an account and have a Wi-Fi or data connection.

To confirm transactions requiring strong authentication even faster, you can always activate Push Notifications.

I did not receive a Push Notification. How can I complete my transaction?

On the transaction confirmation screen, choose to have the myAlpha Code sent to you through SMS or Viber as soon as the waiting time for Push Notifications has expired.

If you still don’t receive Push Notifications:

  • Confirm that Push Notifications are activated on myAlpha Mobile (Menu > Profile > Security settings > Push Notifications).
  • Check your device Settings to confirm that Push Notifications are permitted.
  • Check that you have an active data connection on your device.

I have lost my mobile phone. Can anyone else access my account using myAlpha Mobile?

Your 4-digit PIN is required to access your account on myAlpha Mobile. The only way to bypass this is by using your own biometrics (fingerprint or Face ID).

The mobile phone on which I have activated Push Notifications to confirm transactions has been lost/stolen. Is my account exposed to theft?

No, as long as your account credentials (Username και Password) have not been compromised, too.

However, you still have to remove your connected device on myAlpha Web: Settings > Security settings > Manage your connected devices. Alternatively, you can temporarily suspend your e-Banking account by calling us on +302103260000.

When you get a new device, you will have to download and install the myAlpha Mobile app and activate Push Notifications again.
