About payments

Is there a transaction limit?

No. Payments are not subject to the daily business web banking transaction limit.

You can pay any amount, provided it is not over the maximum amount limit per single transaction, either towards Alpha Bank products or towards organisations and companies.

Can I cancel a payment order I’ve entered?

Yes, but only as long as it has not been executed and your account has not been charged:

  1. Log into business web banking with the digital banking credentials of your business.
  2. From the top central menu, choose Payments > History and locate your payment.
  3. Provided the payment is “Pending”, choose Cancel > Submit.

The payment order is cancelled instantly.

How can I make multiple payments to organisations?

  1. Log into business web banking with the digital banking credentials of your business.
  2. From the top central menu, choose Jobs > New job.
  3. Choose Payments > Multiple payments.
  4. Choose the account from which you want to make the payment, give the payment a task description called “job code” from now on, and fill in the payment date. Click on “Create job”.
  5. Add payments to the job. Choose an organisation, fill in the payment code and amount and choose “Add payment to job”.
  6. Click on “Save job for approval” and confirm.

When are payments executed?

  • On the same day, provided you give the order until 22:00.
  • At a later date that you choose.

For example, when you get a bill, you can schedule the payment so it is executed on the bill due date. You can block the amount in your account, without losing any interest, to make sure it is available on the payment execution date.

If you are paying with your credit card and choose immediate execution, the transaction limit is adjusted when the payment is executed. This way, you can use it immediately for shopping.

What is amount blocking?

If you schedule a payment for a later date, you must make sure there is sufficient balance in your account on the payment date.

To ensure that, you can block the amount in your account when you enter the payment, without losing any interest.

If you don’t choose to block the amount and the account does not have sufficient balance on the payment date, the payment will fail. If you’ve activated alerts, you’ll receive a relevant notification by email or text message on your mobile.

Can I pay by credit card in instalments online and also collect points?

Yes, if you make payments online with your credit card, you automatically collect the corresponding Bonus points.

In some cases, you can also pay in interest-free instalments.

About the Verification of Payee (VoP)

What is Verification of Payee (VoP)?

With Verification of Payee (VoP), every time you transfer money to an account in a SEPA country, the identity of the recipient is verified.

This way you rest assured that you are sending the money to the right recipient, avoiding errors or fraud. Especially in instant transfers, where you cannot cancel the transaction, VoP provides even more protection.

How do I carry on once I receive a verification response?

  • Valid / Match  – The name of the recipient you filled in matches the IBAN. You may complete the transaction.
  • Invalid / No Match  – The name of the recipient you filled in does not match the IBAN. Check the details again before you complete the transaction.
  • Close Match – The name of the recipient you filled in closely resembles the corresponding name at the recipient's bank, but it is not a perfect match (e.g. different name spelling). You choose whether you want to complete the transaction.
  • Verification not possible or not applicable – You do not get any verification response. You can start over.

Is Verification of Payee (VoP) mandatory for all money transfers in Greece?

As of 09.10.2025 Verification of Payee (VoP) is mandatory for all money transfers, pursuant to the regulations on payment security and credibility.

How is Verification of Payee (VoP) carried out when I execute bulk payments and file-based transfers for my business?[

Before each payment order is executed, the system checks and confirms the payee’s name against the IBAN. If the VoP returns a match, the payment is carried out as usual.

If the VoP returns a close match or finds incomplete payment details, then according to whatever you have opted for, the specific payment is:

  • Rejected automatically.
  • Executed without confirmation.

I do not want Verification of Payee (VoP) for my business. What should I do?

The only case when you can dismiss VoP is when you carry out bulk transfers and file-based payments using Alpha Mass Payments.

You can opt out when you activate Alpha Mass Payments at an Alpha Bank branch. You may revoke this decision at any time.

What happens if I do not activate VoP for bulk transfers and file-based payments (Alpha Mass Payments)?

When you fill in the IBAN of the recipient to whom you want to transfer the money, the system does not display their name. This means that you rely solely on the IBAN.

I have not activated VoP for my business. How can I check the details of the recipients when I carry out bulk transfers or file-based payments?

You can use our pre-validation service. Send us the bulk payment file and we’ll check the recipients’ IBANs and names. We will then return the file with answers similar to those provided by the VoP.

Correct the details in the file and send it back to us, if you want us to confirm that you’ve made the corrections properly.
