What you need to know about health insurance plans
The sooner the better
Usually, you can get a health insurance plan from 30 days to 70 years old.
It’s preferable to get insured at a younger age and in good health, as you have better insurability, i.e. eligibility for insurance based on the state of your health. This way you can secure more covers, without exceptions.
Before you need the insurance
Most insurance plans have a waiting period for specific conditions and covers. This means that these conditions will be covered only after a specific period of time has passed from the start of your insurance policy.
Therefore, if you get a health insurance plan after the need for emergency hospitalisation has arisen, it’s likely that you won’t be covered.

Hospitalisation coverage
Hospitalisation plans cover you if you need to be admitted to hospital. Before you choose a plan, check if it meets your needs:
- Which hospitals can you go to free of charge?
- What is the maximum hospitalisation cost covered?
- Do you get other benefits, such as annual check-ups or other tests?
Outpatient coverage
Outpatient plans offer medical services mostly for prevention and diagnosis. Before you choose one, you need to consider:
- Where can you undergo tests?
- What is the maximum amount covered for tests and medical consultations?
- Does the plan cover emergencies or check-ups?

What the premium depends on
- Your age – Usually, the younger the age, the lower the cost.
- Total coverage amount – The maximum amount that can be covered.
- Your excess – The higher your excess, meaning the initial amount you need to pay out of pocket, the lower the premium.
- Family policies – You often get discounts when all family members are insured under the same policy.

Find the right plan for you
- What need am I trying to meet – Do you need coverage for hospitalisation, diagnostic tests or both?
- What covers do I need – Which covers are relevant to you? Are they all included in the insurance plan you’ve found? Are there any exceptions?
- I already have group insurance – Does it cover me no matter what? Do I need something more?
- How much excess do I want to pay – Is it worth paying a higher premium to eliminate the stress of having to pay the excess in case of an emergency? How much does your public health insurance cover?
- How will I be paying the premium – Do you prefer paying in instalments throughout the year? Is there a discount if you opt for a one-off payment?
- How easy is it to manage – Do you get support from the insurance company? Is the claim process straightforward?
