How letters of credit work

Find out how letters of credit work and how they strengthen your position in the global market.
  • We issue a letter credit (LC) upon your request and undertake to pay the value of the goods to the exporter.

  • When the exporter presents the necessary documents (bill of lading, invoices, etc.) and proves they have fulfilled the transaction terms, we make the payment.

  • You pay your supplier through Alpha Bank, based on the letter of credit terms.

  • If you are an export business, we notify you that a letter of credit has been issued by the buyer’s bank abroad.

  • We and the buyer’s bank check the shipping documents. Provided the terms are met, you are paid by the buyer’s bank at the agreed-upon time.

  • We check that the letter of credit is genuine and the terms are properly stated, so you can proceed with dispatching the goods and sending us the shipping documents.

  • If you are an export business and have received a letter of credit from a bank abroad, you can request an additional guarantee from Alpha Bank.

  • Once you receive the letter of credit, you ask us to confirm it, so we undertake the responsibility of making the payment to your business.

  • Provided the buyer’s bank is within the acceptable credit risk limits, we add our confirmation to the letter of credit.
