Impact investments

Working closely with Reforest’Action, along with our clients, we are contributing to the reforestation of the Arona forest through investment products.

Innovating for the environment

In 2021 we offered our Private Banking clients the chance to make impact investments. Through this innovative initiative, we are putting our sustainable and responsible strategy into practice.

We combined an investment product with a targeted effort to restore the forests, partnering with Reforest’Action. For every €1,000 in nominal value of investing in these products, Reforest’Action plants 1 tree. So our clients are financing the planting of 17,379 trees in the Arona forest, Katerini, Greece. This way we:

  • Protect the climate.
  • Respect biodiversity.
  • Care for public health.
  • Reinforce employment.

Which trees does the action protect

Hungarian oak
A deciduous tree, reaching heights of 25 metres. It is the main tree in the Arona forest.
Oriental hornbeam
A small tree, rarely over 10 metres tall, and often shrubby.
Flowering ash
A deciduous tree growing to 15-25 metre tall with a trunk up to 1 metre diameter.
For the first time ever we are introducing the concept of impact investment and putting our sustainable and responsible investment strategy into action.
 

The action at the Arona forest at a glance

  • Restoration of the private Arona forest in Katerini, Greece, occupying an area over 1,000 hectares.
  • Partnership between Reforest’Action and the Forest Research Institute of Thessaloniki.
  • Implementation of a sustainable and quality management programme to restore the ecosystem.
  • Mild and careful intervention that reinforces the resilience of the forest.
  • 30,000 trees will be planted in the period 2021-2026. After that, they will be cared for by special scientists.
  • Improvement of the environmental quality of the forest and its wood.

After implementing a long-term strategy that enhances the natural regeneration of the species of trees, the Arona forest will be benefited by:

  • Conserving the protective value of the forest for the soil and the ecosystem.
  • Maintaining the health of the forest and combating climate change.
  • Improving resistance to biotic and abiotic risks.
  • Enhancing the value of the forest by promoting appropriate species.
  • Protecting the wildlife.

In addition, there will be economic and social benefits for the area. In addition, the forest is suitable for beekeeping, mushrooming and hunting, while it also has great tourism potential.
