The Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection is considered one of the most important ones on an international level. It comprises more than 10,000 coins from the ancient Greek world. A few extremely rare items stand out among them, unique specimens of ancient engraving. The Collection includes coins from the end of the 7th century BC and the invention of coinage to the 3rd century AD and the termination of coin production by the cities of the Roman Empire. However, there are also some Roman and Byzantine coins. The primary aim of the Collection is to highlight the widespread extent and influence of the Greek civilisation on the ancient world. Thus, the Numismatic Collection Section organises exhibitions, lectures and educational programmes, participates in academic symposiums and international conferences and produces the relevant publications. The Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection welcomes researchers, students, pupils, as well as the general public interested in learning history through these coins and admiring this aspect of ancient Greek art.
The new Exhibition of the Numismatic Collection ''ALEXANDER THE GREAT: FROM MACEDONIA TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD'' is on display, as of May 2010, at the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina and will be presented until October 31, 2010. An educational event entitled ''A Day at an ancient Mint!'' will take place on Saturday, September 25, 2010, in the context of the Exhibition.
